Smartphones have a huge role in the way that we go on about our lives. They have had a huge impact in the way that we as a society have grown and evolved into a much more advanced and technical world. Cell phones are used in every aspect of our lives, we use them in school, work, and in our personal life. We rely on these devices to give us the answers to everything. They help keep us organized and make our lives so much easier. Although cell phones have made our lives much easier, they also create consequences ranging from getting into trouble with your teacher, creating short attention spans, to having trouble sleeping at night, and getting into car accidents that can potentially be fatal. People have become accustomed to relying on their cell phones in anything and everything that we do. The connection that we have built with our cell phones have grown so rapidly, that even being away from our phone for a few minutes will send us into panic.
Now I come to you with a proposal on how to solve this issue. People are suffering from NOMOPHOBIA (No-Mobile-Phone-Phobia). NOMOPHOBIA is actually a syndrome that is used to describe individuals that are afraid to be out of contact with their cell phone. People that exhibit NOMOPHOBIA share signs of anger and frustration without their phone. Even something as small as poor signal strength, low battery level, or forgetting their cell phone in the car will trigger their anger. Even though smartphones help us in our daily lives, they may also cause health and social problems.
My proposal to this discourse community problem would be simple. Create a distraction or individuals to be separated from their phone without realizing they are without their phone. For older adults that have been diagnosed with NOMOPHOBIA we would try to create sessions where there would be without their cell phone and they would have to socialize with other individuals that also suffer from NOMOPHOBIA and have them play games, solve puzzles, work on their communication skills, take different classes to learn different things such as baking, art, etc. I would have them do this for a one month period and see how they coupe with it. To target the younger generation that suffers from NOMOPHOBIA I would ask for their parent’s cooperation and have them have a strict limit to when they can use their cell phone. They could ask their phone company to put parental restrictions on their phones to where they turn off at 9:00 every day and they are turned off during school hours to prevent any distractions in class. This is how I would attempt to solve the problem that society faces with cell phone addiction.
