The connection that we have built with our cell phones have grown so rapidly, that even being away from our phone for a few minutes will send us into panic.
The USA Today article on cell phone dependency focuses on how much people can become so latched onto a device and how that device can actually control our lives. Increasing dependence comes as people from apart from books, magazines, newspapers, and maps because of the growing technology that smartphones are compacted with. Smartphones literally have thousands of applications that are capable of doing almost anything ranging from tracking your pulse, playing video games, watching the weather forecast and knowing the temperature outside, reading different versions of the bible, to being your own personal trainer. We rely on these devices to give us the answers to everything. They help keep us organized and make our lives so much easier. Although cell phones have made our lives much easier, they also create consequences ranging from getting into trouble with your teacher, creating short attention spans, to having trouble sleeping at night, and getting into car accidents that can potentially be fatal.
Over the years researchers have been studying different behaviors that exist in an individual who have fallen victim to being called a cell phone junkie. Good communication and organization skills are essential in order for researchers to collaborate together and share their information about their research amongst each other. Researchers like to take polls to see the opinion of others and to collect data from a variety of people to see if they have common opinions. For instance they do studies on how people put themselves to sleep and most of them check their emails, text messages, they surf the web which is a bad idea. All of those factors contribute to the lack of sleep that effect most people who stare at their cell phone late at night. Sleeping issues are not the only problems that these experts are studying; they are also analyzing how much people spend a month to keep their smartphone active. In the USA Today article it reads, “According to J.D. Power and Associates, the average smartphone user spends about $107 each month”. The amount of money that people spend on their cell phones is actually much more expensive that household bills such as electricity, gas, and water. It is hard to believe that a hand held device runs society the way that it does.
